What a Puff-Back Does to Your Home

A puff-back happens when an oil or gas furnace misfires and unburned fuel ignites inside the combustion chamber. The blast forces soot back through the ductwork and out every register in the house. It can happen in seconds, usually while nobody’s home, and the result looks like someone sprayed the walls with black grease.
We see a lot of these in the Capital Region, especially with older oil-fired systems after the first cold nights of the season. The soot is oily, sticky, and slightly acidic. Wiping it with household cleaner just spreads it around and drives it into the paint.
